Ayurvedic Treatments for Menstrual Irregularities (Amenorrhoea, Dysmenorrhoea, Menorrhagia)

Menstruation is the monthly discharge of blood from a woman’s body. Menstrual flow is directly associated with the task of ovulation or reproduction. It is a natural incident, it happens regularly in females, during their reproductive age. During menstruation females face some problems like dysmenorrhoea or aching menstruation, Menorrhagia or too much menstrual flow, amenorrhea or lack of menstrual flow, premenstrual stress and menstrual abdominal cramps.
Ayurvedic texts mention detailed description of these conditions and there treatments. Ayurveda believes most of these conditions are influenced by psychological factors also.

Dietary and Lifestyle Recommendations:

  • Any kind of physical and psychological stress should be strictly avoided.
  • Do Meditation and Yoga, Moderate Exercise, Eat warm and soothing foods
  • Avoid eating gas forming vegetables and fruits like cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, beans, lettuce, mushrooms, parsley, peas, yeast-based products, white flour and white sugar products.
  • During menstruation, raise the foot of the bed in order to keep the legs and feet elevated while sleeping.
  • Avoid tea, coffee, and icy cold drinks. Instead, have drinks at room temperature and that have cooling properties, such as peppermint tea.
  • Cooling showers and bathing with sandalwood and mint essence are helpful.

Ayurvedic home remedies you can try:

  • The white pith of aloe vera cut into small pieces and mixed with kefir to be taken internally to cure leucorrhoea (white discharge).
  • Put a few hibiscus- rosa-sinensis (shoe flower) in hot ghee and sauté for about 5 minutes. Cool the ghee. Take out the flowers. These flowers taken internally can stop excessive bleeding.
  • Drink parsley juice in plenty or blend parsley juice with carrot, cucumber or beet juices to get relief from all kinds of menstrual problems like painful menstruation..
  • Drinking tomato juice everyday improves the blood circulation and is most beneficial in amenorrhoea.
  • Juice prepared from the fresh mango bark is also beneficial for heavy menstrual periods
  • Drinking a mix of honey and equal quantity of rain water in the morning empty stomach is found effective for painful menstruation.

Treatments of menstrual disorders depend on the conditions and dosha vitiations in Ayurveda.
In most of the cases therapies like panchakarma, snehavasti, kadivasti along with internal medication and diet and lifestyle changes are suggested.
